Made in Bangladesh 'smartphone revolution

Made in Bangladesh 'smartphone revolution

After decades of digitalization, the people of Bangladesh still have to remember for a few reasons.

One is that at the very end of the second decade of this century, Bangladesh came to the task of making smart devices. And in just two and half years, Made in Bangladesh has been established and only a few entrepreneurs have left.

But a few years ago, did anyone think that any factory in Bangladesh would be equipped with the world's most advanced mobile phones? Again, the price and value will be better than the imported device!

Out of the imagination, that dream has now become a reality for many companies who are no longer importing devices. Key basic phones or smartphones of the most advanced power are being manufactured in Dhaka, Gazipur or Narsingdi factories.

Some are just making smartphones and are in the process so that they can meet all their needs from a local factory.

Started with Walton on October 25. It has become one of nine factories here. The list includes world-renowned brands like Samsung. There are Chinese brands such as ITEL and Techno that are gaining popularity in various regions. The domestic brand symphony doesn't go down well.

Last year, Vivo and Oppo launched two popular Chinese brands. Unamax has done very well as the local five star brand has had success in its own factory. The waiting list also includes brands like Huawei or Motorola.

There was a time when buyers were searching for 'Made in Finland' or 'Made in Korea' for quality mobile phones. Then it took the place 'Made in China' followed by 'Made in Vietnam'. Now the blazing name on this tag line is 'Made in Bangladesh'.

In the beginning there was a kind of involvement among the buyers. But, all of that has been cut off now. There are some reports in the media about 'Made in Bangladesh' branding on the handset. On the other hand, the quality of the handsets has been widely publicized by the users. And that's where the real work is done.

In fact, Bangladesh has come very close to self-sufficiency in smartphone production in just two years.

Twenty-eight percent of all smartphones sold in the country were produced from factories established in Bangladesh. And in the current year, the demand of smartphones in the market will be able to supply from domestic factories, says local mobile factory owners. Surely this is great news for us.

Over the past few years, it has been seen that around 1 to 5 lakh pc smartphones are sold in the country. Last year, over 100,000 mobile phones were added to various factories in the country. More than 2 million smartphones have either been imported in a legitimate way or entered the country illegally. They believe that it will be produced in the country by 2021.

As a media worker working with the sector, I have been watching the sector grow and grow very closely. I want to have confidence in their faith and commitment.

As Samsung has promised, it will be the first quarter of 2021 to integrate their best-tech smartphone series 'Note' into the factory. It is now a matter of pride for the whole of Bangladesh. The news has also been aired in foreign media.

Samsung is now producing about 5 percent of their local demand in Narsingdi's factory.

In just one year of travel, the two brands - Techno and iTel - have responded to their needs by adding to their factories. It's been two years since Walton has not been importing any sets. These news are making us proud.

But, back when someone will know that Samsung has expressed interest in a factory in Bangladesh in the 21st. But, for various reasons they failed to do so in Vietnam. Then they started three factories in Vietnam. Until last year, around 100 million smartphones were made by Samsung's factories.

And when the Sino-US trade war began, Vietnam gained more momentum. Now, more than half of Samsung's demand for the entire world is being provided by this country.

This can be a disappointment for us without longing for the opposite.

The thing I want to say here is that maybe we missed that train an era ago, but we have to look at how to increase the speed of the train that we eventually catch.

The first task was done in the last budget, the import tax on smartphones has been increased to 5 percent. So everyone has jumped quite fast in setting up factories. Now if the quality is taken into account then it will certainly be more work.

We already know that some entrepreneurs are also working to build factories to create mobile-related accessories. In that case, the demand for various backward linkages, including battery-phone casing-chargers, can come from the local factory.

Who can say that the Bangladeshi exports have not been able to play a major role in the garment once the garment has been up there?

Everyone is talking about exporting from their own factory. If not everyone can start work in at least a couple of years, maybe the device can become a mobile device industry in a matter of days.

Why mobile devices only, laptops also we see 'Made in Bangladesh' tag. This digital device is also being added to the export list, albeit slightly.

We are now looking forward to the day when Europe-America will also get mobile devices with 'Made in Bangladesh' like shirts or denims written in 'Made in Bangladesh'.
